Senator Thom Goolsby

Jobs

Sen. Goolsby wants a balanced budget and pro-growth policies that allow our state’s vibrant private sector to create new commerce opportunities for New Hanover County. To change the state’s business climate he cut taxes and spending to ease regulations and encourage investment from the business community.

An MBA graduate, investments adviser and owner of two small companies, Sen. Goolsby is committed to helping businesses reinvest their earnings. A simple approach to regulation relieves entrepreneurs and developers of undue burdens, but North Carolina’s business climate ranked 44th nationwide in a 2012 Tax Foundation study. Our extensive list of taxes, compliance reports and requirements for small businesses and corporations alike fueled this dismal rating.

Sen. Goolsby opposes Gov. Perdue’s initiatives to offer large tax and cash incentives to businesses considering locations in North Carolina. Project Soccer, a potential deal with Good Year tires, was a primary example of these undue benefits free of requirements for the companies. These deals are prone to corruption and improper influence for advantageous companies in state government.

Credit for new jobs and business deals belongs to the owners, investors and developers of those projects. Sen. Goolsby creates jobs as a business owner, but insists that lawmakers only create opportunities for a growing workforce. Direct subsidies spurred by ideology, rampant in President Obama’s stimulus, will ultimately fail from lack of demand and favoritism in awarding grants.

Policies that offer opportunities to an industry, such as the film credits Sen. Goolsby supported during the first session, are less prone to corruption and influence within state government. They require completion of business agreements and position the private sector for sustainable commerce growth.
