Senator Thom Goolsby

Illegal Immigration

As an attorney, Thom Goolsby understands that the rule of law is sacred in a truly free society. He opposes illegal immigration and believes that state government should discourage illegal aliens from locating within our borders.

Sen. Goolsby supports measures that restrict illegals’ ability to obtain a driver’s license. He opposes illegals’ being granted in-state tuition at state colleges and universities. He is anxious to make Voter ID a requirement in this state.

A leading voice on public safety issues in Raleigh, Sen. Goolsby directs state and local officials to enforce immigration laws. He recognizes this public duty, critical to citizens’ safety, stands free from ideology as a responsibility to residents.

Sen. Goolsby sympathizes with North Carolina natives and legal immigrants frustrated by a federal refusal to enforce laws. Many spent tens of thousands of dollars, separated their families and waited years with uncertain futures to move to the United States.

Those individuals made a personal commitment to our country and state. Their struggle was honest and anchored in the capitalist vision of hard work and opportunity. They deserve to see their sacrifices justified.

Border protection, employer oversight and legal action are necessary to fulfill the federal government’s contract with legal immigrants and citizens: They pay taxes and abide by the laws that leaders enforce to keep them safe and free.

Those are the tradeoffs at stake. They indicate a cultural void between the basic priorities of citizens and the progressive visions of controlling elites.
