Here is an excerpt from the Lumina News’ coverage of the New Hanover County Schools legislative breakfast on Wednesday. New technology, local control and teacher benefits are my priorities for the Senate Education Committee hearings during the next session:
State Sen. Thom Goolsby, R-New Hanover, who has taught law at Campbell University, spoke about the importance of education but also said he does not see the state raising taxes.
“We can’t tax people into prosperity,” Goolsby said.
Following the breakfast, he added that money is not the only way to address issues and that devolving power from Raleigh to the local level regarding education may help.
The General Assembly planned to discuss the budget cuts and education priorities during a short session in May, Goolsby said.
“Hopefully we’ll have more money; we can provide more to the local schools,” Goolsby said. “We just continually focus on how to streamline things, make sure the state laws are effective and do everything we can to educate our children.”
